TTIW Development Blog
Service Unavailable Monday October 2nd from 0:00 am EST to approximatelly 6:00 am EST as we migrate to version 3.4 of TTIW
Service will be unavailable Sunday night (actually Monday morning) as we move to version 3.4 of TTIW. The site will not be accessible from Monday 0:00 am EST to approximatelly Monday 6:00 am EST. You are suggested ( but not required ) to reinstall your bookmarlet after we move to the next version, we'll give you an explanation page on how to do this.
This version took a long time. I had some health issues and I also needed some time off to sort out some personal stuff ( Among other things, I've also gotten my online presence back in order, you can check out my new Homepage if you want to know more about me. It's funny when I was reviewing my CV I started wondering what had happened to my life.. but well, personal problems aside, TTIW just keeps growing so I'm feeling way more positive now ). Anyhow we've been working really hard, so let's get on with..
What's new
First of all, the Shopping Ideas section has been completely redone.
The first and most basic change is how we show when an item is listed by more than one person. So far we've been only showing this on the tag pages when an item was tagged with the same tag by more than one person. Now we will show the actual count of the times an item has been added to a
User's list regardless of the tag used.
I'm explaining this because it will be quite a noticeable change since the database has grown a lot and there are lots of coincidences.
Now, It's a truism of database driven apps that once you have a considerable database there's a lot you can do. And since the db has been growing a lot, we did. :-).. Now, here's what's new:
- In the tag pages you can now sort the Tag pages by popularity (In the current version it's automatically sorted by date added). The new tag pages will also shows you the sites that have items tagged with this tag so that you can find more places to find items you want or are interested in.
- We have created a Most popular page that shows the most popular items of the last 3 months. (This is done algorithmically and it's really cool )
- We have created an Item page. In this page you will be able to write reviews of items, find other people who have listed this item, find all the tags used on that item and also find similar items (In technical terms, We have done some basic collaborative filtering based on coincidence of items on lists. Though it's very basic, It is trully very cool. The nice thing is the more the database grows the more intelligent it becomes and the more stuff like this we'll be able to do).
- We have created a Site page. This page shows the most Popular Items from that site, some data we are getting from Alexa, the most popular tags used on items from that site, and you will also be able to write Reviews for that site.
- There's a new Search page, that does some basic searching from the user generated database.
Appart from that we have done a New bookmarlet that:
- Picks up the Item photo on 95% of chances even if we don´t customize the bot for the site. (From a technical perspective we are doing some old school web page analysis. Just some basic position and area comparison ( the old school part of this ) on the DOM ( new school ).)
- is able of picking the right data from within a set of frames.
And we have also changed the "Add new Item" Interface:
- We have improved the way in which you select the item photo (when the bookmarlet+bot does not pick it right on it's own).
- We have implemented a dynamic tag suggestion mechanism. (It's really, really cool.)
- And there's also some more programmatically intelligence added to this interface, but it is something too technical to discuss here. (Actually this whole new version is about more programmatical intelligence. )
And last but not least, We've also fixed a Zillon quirks and interface issues. And There is also some deep backend stuff that's too technical to get into here. BTW, we are using the hReview microformat for items and site reviews. ( With the include pattern! )
We really hope you like this new version. Personally, I'm very proud of this one.

It appears that the DNS operator for thethingsiwant.com
has installed an invalid MX record with an IP address
instead of a domain name on the right hand side.
This is a problem which will cause a lot of email server software (especially that which follows the RFC's) to refuse to send email to you.
